That said, I do sometimes wonder if this relationship is healthy. While technology makes communication easier, I feel that it consumes too much of my time. I often catch myself mindlessly scrolling through social media instead of focusing on things I should be doing, like studying, socializing in person, or being more productive. A 2002 study by R Blank highlights, the overload of information from technology can lead to cognitive challenges, making it tough to concentrate and process what I’m taking in. This leaves me questioning whether technology is truly making my life better or just more complicated. This information has been proven true in my own life. For example, fitness is a passion of mine, and my feed is filled with tips to improve my diet and workout routine. You’d think this flood of information would be beneficial, but I find it overwhelming. With so many different lifestyles and approaches out there, it’s hard to know who to trust, and I end up feeling lost amid all the noise.
Additionally, the addictive qualities of many apps and platforms can lead to compulsive habits, such as excessive scrolling. This behavior often turns into endless scrolling through negative news or social media, which can heighten feelings of anxiety and emotional exhaustion. Research indicates that excessive screen time and heavy engagement with digital content can have serious consequences on mental health. For instance, a study by Nexus Health Systems found that young people who heavily use screens are at a higher risk for developing anxiety, depression, and other behavioral issues. Alarmingly, these mental health effects can persist for as long as two years after they start relying on digital media. In my person life I have seen this be abused by a close family member who is already mentally sick. Whenever they are anxious they will get out their phone and scroll even if they are in a social setting. After they scroll for a while their mood will turn to be more irritable and anxious.
Reflecting on everything, the video we watched in class—a remix by Moby of a classic Tears For Fears song—really resonated with me about the emotional impact of technology. The unsettling visuals combined with the music made me think deeply about our digital lives. It highlighted how easy it is to get swept up in the constant noise of our devices. Sometimes, we really need to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the world around us. The images and music conveyed a strong message. While technology can enrich our lives, it’s crucial to find a balance so we don’t sacrifice our mental health or lose sight of genuine connections.
